Fans were rather unanimously bummed when news broke today that the long-rumored Buffy the Vampire Slayer was going forward reboot film, and that beloved Buffyverse mastermind Joss Whedon was not involved. Topless Robot called it “a bold move to want to relaunch a franchise and keep absolutely none of its original fanbase;” Entertainment Weekly’s reader comments ranged from “No Whedon, no go” to the even more succinct “BARFFFF.”
E! Online went straight to Whedon for a reaction, and while expressing “strong, mixed emotions,” he responded in his typically even-handed, self-effacing fashion: “I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.”
It probably helps that Whedon’s got his hands rather full right now; writing and directing 2012’s The Avengers for Marvel Studios. His reaction in full is here.
