On more than one occasion when I have interviewed comic book creators and asked what it was like for them to create an original story with original characters; they've replied that it sometimes takes a lot out of them. The endless hours combined where the writer/illustrator sits and wracks his or her brain trying to conjure up unique and interesting ideas with enticing characters isn't easy, and can sometimes become overwhelming. Writing an original story, or creating an original character can often mean putting themselves out there- giving part of themselves to the story and sharing it with the world. Yet, the moment they share is also the moment that the project no longer belongs to them. It belongs to the publisher who published their book, to the agent that got them noticed, to the film company who funded the project and finally, to the audience; to the fans. This project, whatever it may be, suddenly belongs to anyone who has become monetarily or emotionally invested in it in one way or another and the creator suddenly becomes simply a name in the credits of the movie, or on the cover of the book. As a result, the idea that something they conjured up and worked hard to perfect could be taken into a new creative direction without their input, is a concept that can be very hard to swallow. Such is writer/director Joss Whedon's current predicament. On the heels of the announcement that Warner Brothers purchased the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and that they would be doing a reboot of the film and television series without it's creator; Whedon was quick to reply in a discussion with Collider.

Whedon went on, very honestly, to express that while he always hoped that Buffy would live on long after Whedon, that he was not pleased that a studio would reboot her film without letting him know, first.
"l Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, “Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson? This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER.” Apparently I was misinformed. Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more? I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware
that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I’m making a Batman movie. Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer belongs to Warner Brothers, and to you, and to me. However, Joss Whedon, more than anyone, has every right to be upset over a reboot- which will in no way involve him- yet will be based on a character that became wildly popular as a result of his hard work and creativity. To add insult to injury, the screenplay for the film will be written by Whit Anderson, an actress who has appeared in two films ( YES MAN, SAW: REBIRTH) and who's only credentials for writing the screenplay for the BUFFY reboot is that she's a 'really big fan.' Whedon has a point. It might seem reasonable to bring in a 'fan' to write the screenplay- if the writer were dead- but Whedon, who created BUFFY is still very much alive, so why isn't he working on it?
What do you think of the idea of a BUFFY movie reboot without Joss Whedon? Do you think that as creator, he should be involved? Should he have the right to be upset over the future of a property he created"

HBO released the latest teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated Game of Thrones miniseries last night. The show won’t premier until 2011, but you can now see sixty seconds of sword-swinging, head-chopping, medieval action.
As Screen Rant said in our preview last week, Game of Thrones is HBO’s latest foray into high-profile, big-budget TV series after receiving some serious competition from Showtime and AMC. Aside from the long-running True Blood and newcomer Boardwalk Empire, the once and future king of cable TV isn’t taking the task of creating high-profile original programming lightly at the moment.

Speaking with the news organization, a pair of insiders claimed that negotiations are already underway between the Xbox Live provider and television networks. The goal, according to Reuters' sources, is to turn Microsoft's online service into a 'virtual cable operator,' offering premium cable programming through the Xbox 360 for a monthly rate. The anonymous tipsters also mentioned plans to allow current cable subscribers the option to watch shows on their consoles with added interactivity, as well as the possibility of incorporating more standalone channels into the Xbox Live service -- something along the lines of the recently launched ESPN streaming service, for instance.
A Reuters report indicates that Microsoft is in early talks to bring some form of television subscription service to the Xbox 360.

Even back when Renner was first cast alongside Tom Cruise, some people speculated that he might be positioned to take over the reins of the franchise. Now, in an interview with MTV, Renner has confirmed that that's exactly the case:
'It's a franchise to potentially take over,' he said. 'I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea.' So, depending on how well the next installment fairs at the box office, we may very well see Renner in charge of future missions... that are impossible.
While this news doesn't exactly come as a surprise, I'll be curious to see how people react to it. The Mission: Impossible series has always come across as a vehicle for Tom Cruise more than anything else, so to take him out of the equation might be a tricky proposition. On one hand, Cruise's popularity has dwindled over the past few years, so his eventual absence might not make that much difference. On the other hand, I think Cruise still carries enough star power that not having him around could make for a tough sell. What are your thoughts on this news? Is Jeremy Renner a worthy choice to take over the series? Can the franchise still prosper without Tom Cruise?"

However, Bill Murray kept popping up in interviews, trashing Eisenberg and Stupnitsky's last film Year One, and acting as if he wanted nothing to do with it. Recently we heard that Dan Aykroyd was reworking the script and that Sony was considering a May 2011 start date for the film, but with casting for the 'next generation' of Ghostbusters still up in the air, it remains unclear if this sequel will happen anytime soon. However, this week, we've got some random casting rumours to add to the mix, and if they are accurate, it sounds like Ghostbusters could be drawing from Saturday Night Live talent all over again.
According to a Sony casting call that went out in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, Anna Faris is already listed as being the first new cast member on board in addition to the original line-up from the first two films. The Australian movie site What's Playing followed this up with a report from another industry source indicating that both Will Forte and Bill Hader have been mentioned as possibilities for younger Ghostbuster roles. But is there actually any truth to this?
Anna Faris seems likely, especially since The House Bunny did so well for Sony, and she clearly has established herself as a comedic actress who can draw. However, the failure of MacGruber at the box office might make Sony think twice about hanging a major franchise on Will Forte. Although this film will have a built-in audience based on the name and the original cast, they want the option to carry on the franchise with the younger generation afterward. Bill Hader does seem a little more likely, especially since he and Anna Faris both voiced Sony's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs together.
At the end of the day, though, none of this is confirmed in any way, and there are probably plenty of other up and coming actors vying for these roles as well. What do you think about these casting possibilities? Is Saturday Night Live a good place to recruit from, considering that both Murray and Aykroyd are SNL alumni? Who would you like to see in Ghostbusters 3?"
