Tomb Raider dev seeking multiplayer developers

Tomb Raider dev seeking multiplayer developers: "

Among listings for a technical producer and a senior level designer at Crystal Dynamics on the forthcoming Tomb Raider reboot, two positions popped up that we didn't expect to see: 'multiplayer producer' and 'senior multiplayer game designer.' Though no multiplayer of any kind has been announced for the upcoming TR game, the listings go a long way in confirming it -- the job descriptions explicitly say 'Come and work on the new Tomb Raider,' for instance. It wouldn't be the first time a game starring Ms. Croft contained multiplayer functionality, as this year's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light featured co-op play.

Crystal Dynamics is hoping to fill the multiplayer producer position with an individual who has 'demonstrable project management experience,' and can 'take on a major production role in the multi-player part of an upcoming action adventure title.' The senior multiplayer game designer position listing notes some potential info about what the game's multiplayer might have, cursorily detailing it as both co-op and 'player vs. player.' The latter position will also be 'responsible for the overall multiplayer design vision for the game,' so, uh, good luck with that, potential employees! A Crystal Dynamics representative gave us an official 'No comment,' but wouldn't say anything else regarding the listings.

New Details Emerge on Tomb Raider Reboot

New Details Emerge on Tomb Raider Reboot: "

Tomb Raider cover

Yesterday finally brought the official confirmation of Crystal Dynamics' long-rumored Tomb Raider reboot, and now much more information on the title from Game Informer's cover story has hit the net (via CVG). And it seems like remarkably little has actually changed in the game's design and direction from the early details leaked in a survey way back in July of last year.

We already knew the game takes place on an island once a young and inexperienced Lara Croft becomes shipwrecked on it. And as GI's story confirms, this new Tomb Raider will indeed be an 'open world' game, with Lara theoretically able to travel anywhere on the island that she pleases. Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher evidently compared it to previous Tomb Raider titles as removing the 'smoke and mirrors,' as there's no longer an 'illusion of freedom' and gamers can reportedly choose any path they want to get to their goal. However, it also sounds like this Tomb Raider is taking on a little of the 'Metroidvania' game design structure, as Lara's skills and equipment will also upgrade throughout the game, allowing her to access more and more areas of the island.

Beyond the open-world nature of the game, the GI story also confirms a number of tidbits: Lara is 21 when the game takes place; they're using performance capture for the animation; lock-on targeting has been eschewed in favor of a free aiming system; there will be base camps on the island where you can upgrade Lara's skills and equipment, as well as use to fast-travel around the island; and Lara will evidently need to gather food and water to survive.

Tomb Raider Reboot Announced

Tomb Raider Reboot Announced: "

Last year some leaked information hit the net regarding the new Tomb Raider. It detailed a young and inexperienced Lara Croft stranded on an island in the pacific after a shipwreck. Now trapped, Lara has to deal with the natural dangers that the island presents.  The leak featured a bulletpoint list with some gameplay features we could expect.

  • Hunt or Be Hunted: Evade, outsmart, trick and kill the mysterious enemies that hunt you as prey.
  • Survival Action: Brutally attack and defend yourself as you fight to survive through visceral one-on-one melee combat.
  • Strategic Weapons: Gain an advantage in combat by finding an array of different melee and ranged weapons including a variety of guns, and the hunter’s ultimate weapon, the bow.
  • Creative Survival: React and adapt to the island by using only that which you can salvage from the environment like climbing axes, rope, and machetes that can be used to unlock new traversal and combat gameplay options.
  • Free Movement: Scramble up a vertical cliff wall, sprint and leap across a huge chasm, steer mid-air to land a misdirected jump: There is no one right way to traverse, survive, and explore the harsh environment of the island.
  • One Cohesive World: The diverse multi-region island is an open playground alive with creatures, weather, and natural events.
  • Origin Story: The new Tomb Raider concept reboots the franchise by exploring Lara Croft’s transformation into a hardened adventurer as you unravel the story behind the island’s mysterious past.

It was a pretty convincing leak at the time and it was practically solidified by the immediate legal action taken to have the leaks removed. Today Square Enix has officially announced the new Tomb Raider reboot in this press release:

New Tomb Raider Reboot Announcement Imminent?

New Tomb Raider Reboot Announcement Imminent?: "

Game Informer teaser

It looks like the long-running rumors and speculation about the next proper Tomb Raider game may soon come to an end. The latest issue of Game Informer includes a two-page spread (via NeoGAF) of a teaser image for the next issue of Game Informer, showing artwork of a shipwreck with the words 'A Survivor is Born' scrawled across the pages.

Not much to go on, sure...until you recall this pretty much exactly matches earlier rumors of a potential Tomb Raider reboot. Last year, a market research survey leaked to the net describing one concept for such a reboot, where a 'young and inexperienced' Lara Croft would become shipwrecked and marooned on an island. The game would supposedly focus on the concept of 'survival,' as well as on hunting and being hunted by mysterious enemies.

So yes, this teaser image may be foreshadowing the announcement of a completely unrelated game that also just happens to be about a shipwreck and the following struggle for survival (which, let's be real, is certainly within the realm of coincidental-if-unlikely possibility). Or, it could be an early hint that this Tomb Raider reboot concept is, in the end, the real-deal -- and we'll get a few more details soon enough. The teaser image says the next cover will be revealed on Game Informer's website on December 6, so all mysteries will be answered then.

Tomb Raider: Lara Croft

tomb raider cosplay - lara croftLara Croft is a Tomb Raider in search of lost treasures. Interesting note is that this character was honored a star in the Walk of Game and has earned a Guinness World Record for being the “most successful human video game heroine”.

And to think, she was originally just an Indiana Jones clone.

Actually, this isn’t a fan cosplay. Karima Adebibe is the official model for Lara Croft. She basically cosplays Lara for game promotions on radio, TV, and other media. She also had a small role as the sacrificial maiden in the movie Alien vs. Predator in 2004.

I still think, even if she’s being paid to look like Lara, she does an awesome cosplay. Professionalism at its finest.
