There hasn’t been much to paw at since the first announcement, so it might be easy to forget that THUNDERCATS is getting a revival next year on Cartoon Network. Splash Page, however, just got some juicy quotes from Michael Jelenic, who’s a producer of the show, While this isn't a big helping of catnip, it's still a ball of yarn to play with (yes, I love extended metaphors.) For one, they’re going to simplify the mythos a bit in this “reimagining.'
In Jelenic's words…
'One thing is that I tried to simplify the mythology a little bit… It's a pretty complicated backstory that borrows from a lot of other sci-fi stuff, like Superman and Star Wars. In developing this, I wanted it to be a little more simple. In the other version, there's something like three different planets involved, and they all converge onto one planet, and nobody's really connected.'
He mentioned that he’s worked on a lot of BATMAN projects and other DC animated projects prior to this, but none of them have had this kind of instant enthusiasm from people. And no character has aroused more enthusiasm (and/or dread) than Lion-O’s sidekick Snarf.
'Everyone always wants to know about Snarf… He will be in it, and he will not talk. Don't worry… He won't be going, 'Lion-O, why don't you do this? We just having him say, 'Snarf! Snarf!' That's a way to get him in the show without annoying every single person who hates him. It's funny, because people are always like, 'I hate Snarf! Wait. you're not going to put him in? That's terrible!''
The rest of the gang, including Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra and, of course, Mumm-Ra are going to return, too. They're getting darker redesigns, but they'll still be the characters everybody remembers and adores.
Jelenic speculates that the enthusiasm might be a result of this being the last great property to get a revival - - to which, I ask, where’s my BRAVESTARR re-imagining? Trust me, I love to shout "Thundercats ho!" as much as anybody, but it doesn't have quite as much oomph as "Strength of the bear!" Somebody get on this, because I'm positive I'm not the only fan of this space cowboy show...
