What better way to start a weekend than by taking in the pure awesome of the first official trailer for next summer's Thor. The film will kick-off Marvel's crossover film extravaganza on May 6, 2011, followed by Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22, and then by the mother of all comic films in The Avengers on May 4, 2012. However, don't expect Thor to be some promotional stepping stone towards "the main event." It actually appears to have a compelling story to tell. The teaser trailer we saw back in July at Comic-Con (which briefly leaked on the web,) effectively illustrated the lush scenery of Thor's mystical home of Asgard and gave a little taste of the carnage that would come the way of Earth upon his ignominious exile on our planet. (Thanks, Odin, don't do us any favors.) This trailer, while only slightly expanding on the scenery, distinguishes itself by giving us a pretty good grasp of the plot and the chain of events in the film. The classical costumed spectacle brought by director and Shakespearean legend Kenneth Branagh mixes quite well with the mind-blowing action. It's like high-culture theater -- with explosions. Do yourself a favor and take a look at this hot-off-the-press trailer just below.
If there's one common theme in this trailer, it's Thor just kicking the ever-loving crap out of anything. Whether he's on Earth, making Red Shirts out of Federal Agents or embarrassing Odin's Royal Guards, it's pretty clear that the universe is a drunken Thor's bar and there's not a bouncer out there tough enough to throw him out. (Except for maybe Superman, who besides being a DC character, is busy being rebooted and all.) We also got more footage of the Destroyer as he rips a small New Mexico town to shreds, as well as Thor in the heat of battle with Loki, full curly-horned helmet and all. Stellan SkarsgÄrd's Professor Andrews, Jaimie Alexander's Sif, and Tadanobu Asano's Hogun are also prominently seen this time around.
Packaged with this new movie poster, it's clear that Marvel is slowly beginning to plant the seeds of hype with this trailer at what is just under six months until the film's release. Get ready folks, because for the next few years, you're going to have more than your fill of the Avengers hoopla, whether you like it or not. (Oh, come on, of course you're going to like it!)
What's your impression of the trailer? (And of Chris Hemsworth's hybrid Aussie/English Nobility accent?)
